How AI Search Actually Works
AI doesn't rank websites. It retrieves, parses, extracts, and ranks fragments. Understanding this pipeline is essential to becoming visible.
Retrieval-Augmented Generation
This is how LLMs find and synthesize information. Each stage has requirements — miss one, and you're filtered out.
AI searches its index for relevant documents. If your content isn't crawlable or fast-loading, it never enters the candidate pool.
AI parses document structure — headings, lists, tables. Unstructured "walls of text" are harder to process and less likely to be extracted.
AI extracts specific facts to answer the query. Self-contained "answer nuggets" extract cleanly; vague prose doesn't.
AI decides which source to cite. Authority signals, recency, and corroboration from other sources determine final selection.
Each AI has different rules
ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude use different retrieval engines and weighting systems. Optimization must be platform-aware.
